Drill Bit Materials

HSS M35 M42 Cobalt Powdered Metal Solid Carbide
  • General purpose on mild steels and non-ferrous materials such as aluminum, brass, bronze and copper
  • More tolerated in low rigidity setup
  • Better wear resistance, higher hardness and toughness than HSS
  • Very little chipping under heavy cutting conditions, allowing the cobalt drill to run faster than HSS
  • Cost-effective for machining cast iron, heat-treated steels, and titanium alloys
  • More tolerated in low rigidity setup
  •  Tougher and less brittle than solid carbide, often as cost-effective alternative to solid carbide
  • Superior wear life in materials less than 30 HRc and highly abrasive materials like high-silicon aluminum
  • High-performance application in which carbide end mill can run faster and withstand higher temperatures while providing good wear resistance
  • Carbide is more brittle than HSS and cobalt and best suited in stable rigidity setup to avoid chipping

Drill Point Angle

118 130 135 Split Point 140
General purpose point angle for mild steel and soft metal, plastics, and wood Common on HSS parabolic drills. Disperse heat well and help keep the drill straight in deeper holes Common on heavy-duty drills for metals such as stainless steel, split point prevents walking when starting a new hole Common on high-performance carbide drills, a more aggressive point angle can penetrate tough materials quickly

Coating

Black Oxided Bright Finished TiN (Titanium Nitride) AlTiN Amorphous Diamond CVD Diamond
  • Retains lubricants to help in wear resistance
  • Not recommended in non-ferrous materials such as aluminum
  • Polished with no coating which helps to increase chip flow in soft materials
  • Recommended in aluminum, plastics, and wood
  • General purpose coating
  • Better hardness and heat resistance allow drills to run at a higher speed and feeds than uncoated drills
  • High temperature and abrasive conditions
  • Use in stainless steel, high alloy carbon steels, nickel-based high-temperature alloy, and titanium alloys.
  • Not recommended in non-ferrous materials such as aluminum
  • AlTiN coating increase SFM by 40%
  •  A PVD coating improves lubricity and wear resistance in non-ferrous material
  • Sharp edges
    improve performance and
finish over CVD in certain abrasive, non-ferrous materials (copper, brass, high silicon aluminum)
  • Low temperature
    threshold unsuitable
    for ferrous application
  • Hardness improves abrasion resistance and allows higher feed rates than uncoated
    carbide
  • Ideal for machining Graphite, Composites, Green Carbide, and Green Ceramic
